Cochlear Implant

The cochlear implant is an electronic device that is surgically implanted under the skin with electrodes positioned in the cochlea (organ of hearing) to stimulate the auditory nerve (hearing nerve). The cochlear implant has both internal and external parts and should give the patient sound perception by stimulation of the auditory nerve via the implanted electrode array. A cochlear implant is indicated for patients with severe to profound bilateral (two ear) hearing loss that cannot benefit from conventional hearing aid technology.

Extended Wear Hearing Device:

Lyric is the only extended wear hearing device that is 100% invisible. The Lyric is comfortably placed in the ear canal by our Lyric trained hearing professionals. The Lyric can be worn 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for months at a time. No surgery or anesthesia is required. Lyric is positioned completely inside the ear canal, so it uses your ear’s natural anatomy to provide exceptional and natural sound quality.

Middle Ear Implant:

A middle ear implant (MEI) is basically a hearing aid, but one in which the receiver (loudspeaker) or the entire hearing aid surgically inserted into the patient’s middle ear space. There are many of these devices in development and seeking FDA approval; however there are only two devices which currently hold FDA approval; Vibrant Med-El and Soundtec Direct System.

Candidates for middle ear implants typically have hearing loss of a sensorineural type and do not have history of middle ear problems. The middle ear implant is different from a cochlear implant, as they are designed for those with significant residual hearing. The major advantages of these types of devices are better sound quality, reduced instances of acoustic feedback, less lifestyle restrictions, and the cosmetic appeal. The devices are also useful for those that cannot tolerate conventional hearing aid technology due to chronic outer ear disease or allergies to hearing aid materials.

Bone Anchored Hearing Device

The Bone Anchored Hearing Device is a percutaneous device primarily used for patients with conductive hearing losses or with single-sided deafness. A small titanium fixture is surgically placed behind the patient’s ear. An external sound processor can be attached, at will, to this fixture via a percutaneous abutment. The device works by sending sound through bone conduction transmission directly to the inner ear.
